Frequently Asked Questions

Your browser downloads and uploads sample payloads from Cloudflare's edge network (speed.cloudflare.com) while we measure how long each chunk takes. We start with small payloads to measure latency, then scale up to saturate your link for the throughput numbers. Ping is the median of 10 round trips; jitter is the average absolute deviation from that median.

Different test servers, different distances and different overhead. Ookla often picks an ISP-hosted server inside your provider's network, which can inflate numbers. We use Cloudflare's public edge, which usually reflects what you'd actually get reaching real-world sites and SaaS apps. A 5–20% gap between tools is normal.

Ping: under 30 ms is great, 30–60 ms is fine for video calls and most gaming, 60–100 ms is OK for browsing but noticeable in FPS games, >100 ms feels laggy. Jitter: under 10 ms is excellent, 10–30 ms is acceptable, >30 ms causes choppy voice/video calls and unstable game sessions.

Per stream / per person: HD video ~5 Mbps, 4K video ~25 Mbps, Zoom / Google Meet ~3 Mbps both directions, competitive online gaming actually only needs ~3 Mbps but very low ping. Cloud backups / large file uploads benefit from anything above ~50 Mbps up. Multiply by the number of simultaneous users on your network.

The most common culprits: Wi-Fi (especially older 2.4 GHz or distance from router), router CPU bottlenecks, a busy network (someone else streaming/torrenting), browser limits, or your ISP's actual delivered speed versus the advertised "up to" rate. Run a wired test if you can — that isolates Wi-Fi from your line.

The download/upload payloads are random throwaway bytes sent to Cloudflare's speed-test endpoint — no personal data leaves your browser. Your test history is stored only in this browser's localStorage; clearing it removes everything. We don't see your results.
